Innsbruck Medical University was one of the four founding faculties of the University of Innsbruck founded by Emperor Leopold I in 1669. In 2004 it became an independent university. The organisational units of the Medical University are divided into a theoretical medical field, a clinical area and other (service) facilities. The clinics are located at the Tyrolean State Hospital, which also functions as a clinic of Innsbruck Medical University. There are three Nobel Prize laureates among the Innsbruck Medical University graduates -Fritz Pregl, 1923 (chemistry - for his contributions to quantitative organic microanalysis), Adolf Windhaus, 1928 (chemistry - for his work on sterols and their relation to vitamins) and Hans Fischer, 1930 (chemistry - for the synthesis of haemin).
